Tom first learned to love Latin at St. Anselm's Abbey School in Washington, D.C., from there he went on to Dickinson College. He studied Latin and economics and received the M.G. Filler Prize for Excellence in Classical Studies. Before coming to Mercersburg, he taught at Christ School in North Carolina and shared his excitement for the timeless wisdom of the classics. While at Christ School, Tom developed a Paideia-inspired seminar approach for ancient history courses and headed the Foreign Languages Department. His excellence in teaching prompted his receiving the James M. Johnston Instructor's Award at Mercersburg for the 1996-97 school year, and he has held the Chapman Chair since 2001.

For enjoyment, Tom works on his 1969 Dodge Coronet, tinkers with Apple computers, raises chickens and dairy goats, and tends an organic garden with his family. He also enjoys traveling in Italy, coaching the Catholic team, and reading historical fiction.

A former teacher at the Groton School in Massachusetts, Karl returned to his native Pennsylvania to share his love of history, English literature and the classics with the students of Mercersburg. A Renaissance man, Karl's interests are as far-ranging as the skills he brings into his classroom. He finds Christian theology, Western art and literature, and monasticism as captivating as his interests and love for biking, fishing, and forays to national parks.     Karl has traveled extensively with students all over Europe and the Mediterranean. A baseball fanatic and Redskins devotee, Karl spends an extraordinary amount of time coaching, watching, and talking about his favorite sports while trying at the same time to explain them to Mr. Thorne.
