OWL

Owls are easily distinguished from other predatory birds.  All are equipped with hooked bills and menacing talons for piercing the heart of prey.  Owls mostly locate quarry from a perch, then pounce skillfully down on the victim.  Wings are broad and rounded with a large surface area to make flying effortless.  The adaptation of comb-like leading feathers breaks down turbulence to muffle the sound of wind in flight.  This feature gives the birds the double advantage of being able to hear prey without being heard.  As nocturnal predators, one is more likely to hear the distinctive owl call: hoots or less commonly screeching and whistling.
