Proquest Historical Newspapers

See Search Tips
ProQuest is a full-text article database that focuses on historical articles rather than
current articles like Infotrac Academic ASAP or Lexis-Nexis. Our ProQuest subscription includes the
Christian Science Monitor (1851-2001), The New York Times (1851-2001),
The Washington Post (1877-1988),
and The Wall Street Journal (1889-1987). All articles are digitally reproduced exactly as they
appeared in the the publications when they hit the newsstand. The articles can be viewed as full page
pdf's or article images. As the researcher, you may choose to search all four publications, just one publication,
or a combination of the four. You may also choose to search a specific date, before a date, or between
two dates. All of these are options in the Basic Search.
Search Tips
- Basic Search - Enter search terms and search multiple databases, choose one or a few,
and enter specific dates if desired. This is the simplest search screen available.
- Advanced Search - The Advanced Search allows the searcher to limit the fields of concentration to the citation and artice
text, citation and abstract text, abstract, article text, article title, article type,
or the author. Examples of the article type include birth notices, comics, front page
stories, marriages, stock quotes or weather. The researcher may enter three or more search terms and choose from
Boolean operators (e.g. and, or, not) to connect them or vicinity limitors. Again, the
option is available to limit the search by database and by date.
- Publication Search - searches only one publication, or a few publications for
the search terms. There are no other ways to limit the search. The Advanced Search
allows the searcher to limit the fields of concentration to the citation and article
text, citation and abstract text, abstract, article text, article title, article type,
or the author. Examples of the article type include birth notices, comics, front page
stories, marriages, stock quotes or weather. The researcher may enter three or more search terms and choose from
Boolean operators (e.g. and, or, not) to connect them or vicinity limitors.
