The Grove Dictionary of Art contains 45,000 articles on every aspect of the visual arts - painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography - from prehistory to the present day. The articles hale from the Grove Dictionary of Art print edition and the Oxford Companion to Western Art print edition. The advantage of being online allows for quicker updates and fast linkages between articles.

Articles cover artist, patron, and writer (critics and theorists) biographies, styles, groups, movements, country surveys, art forms, and content iconography.


Images
Thousands of images of paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, architecture, photography and the decorative arts are accessible. Images are both included in articles and available through outside links like the Bridgeman Art Library, Art Resource, and various international museums and galleries. All are easy to search and can be limited by artist, image, time period, location, and more.


Search Tips

  • Advanced Search
    • Full-text: allows the you to "keyword" search entries.
    • Biographies: the best way to search for an artist. Use instead of Full-text Search.
    • Bibliographies: for the serious researcher wanting to know a little more about a topic by searching the works cited in bibliographies.
    • Contributers: use to find what authors wrote which entries.
  • Image Search - Grove offers a few options for finding images. You may find them in the articles themselves by utilizing the Image Links link when you are reading an article, or you may look to the Image Search link instead.
    • Art Image Links: search artists, their works, location of work, etc. All images are links to sources outside of Grove.
    • Art Image Collections: a compilation of searchable art collections from all over the world.
  • Browse - if you do not know how exactly to spell a word, this is your best bet. A search will take you to an alphabetical list of topics and you can find where your topic fits alphabetically.
  • Explore - Grove's newest edition to the database, this collection of topical indicies allows you to see a subject in the midst of similar topics and helps you hone in your search to specific articles of interest.
